My dog, Tucker, never liked when you would get in his face if he was laying down.  I will always temper test any new dog that I get so that I know if they are safe around people and especially children.  This means that I would intentionally push buttons to see how far they will allow you to go before they say no and specifically no with teeth.  One day, when Tucker was laying down on the floor, I dropped down beside him and put my face up to his and he started growling.  I then knew that this was a behavior that I needed to be careful with.  Throughout his time with me, he did this to me often and I would jokingly say that he was purring like a cat.  However, he never once followed through with a bite but then again that was with me and I’m the one who provided the food.  I didn’t want to take the chance with anyone he didn’t know though.
