My dog Cooper was missing an eye since before I adopted him. When I first took him home from the shelter, his eye was stitched up by the vet at the county shelter. After a few days, I noticed a foul smell coming from it. Thinking that it could be infected, I took him to my vet to get checked out. My vet told me that the injury to his eye had also created a hole in the top of his mouth that was causing food to get lodged in his eye socket. My vet told me that it would most likely fill up again if he was to stitch it back up. I asked if it would be possible to leave the wound open, so that I could keep it clean and free of debris. My vet said that we could do that if I wanted. Going forward after each meal, I would clean out the food from his wound. Cooper knew exactly what to do when I would say to him, “Let’s clean your eye!”. He would immediately lay down and let me take care of cleaning the debris out of it. He never complained at all whenever I did this.
