This will be the first post in “My Favorite Dog Stories” series.  My dog Cooper was my absolute favorite but please don’t tell any of my others.  I adopted Cooper in 2020 and he was only with me for eight short months.  I had recently lost my previous dog to cancer and was looking for a new dog to adopt.  In reviewing the Clay County Animal Shelter website, I noticed a German Shepherd who only had one eye.  He had been at the shelter for 18 days and no one had been willing to take him home.  I went that day to go see him.  I walked all the way down the corridor and found him in the last kennel on the left.  We made eye contact and I moved my hand over to the fence to allow him to smell me.  After he did so, he threw his back against the fence wanting me to pet him which I did.  When I stopped, he started speaking (soft barking) to me and I’m sure you can guess what he was trying to say.  I asked if I could meet him outside of his kennel and the staff obliged.  When we were in the greeting area, he was more concerned with the staff person than me and that was ok.  He knew her and did not know me, so I watched intently on how he reacted with her and that let me know how he would be with me once I brought him home.  I took him home with me that same day.  After bringing him to my vet, I was advised that he had severe trauma (possibly a gunshot) to his head which caused him to lose his eye.  That didn’t slow him down a bit though.
